Change letter spacing and fit text in a box

When a headline runs one word too long or text spills out of its box, you can tighten the letters or let PubKeep fit the text for you.

    1. Click in the text box and drag across the text you want to change.
    2. Click the Home tab.
    3. In the Font group, click Character Spacing.
    4. Choose Very Tight, Tight, Normal, Loose or Very Loose.

Normal puts the spacing back the way it was.

    1. Select the text, then click Character Spacing > More Spacing.
    2. Under Tracking, type a percentage in By this amount:. Less than 100% pulls letters closer together, and more than 100% spreads them out.
    3. Click OK.

The same window also has Scaling, which makes letters narrower or wider, and Kerning, for the gap between two letters.

    1. Click inside the text box so you’re typing in it. The Text Box tab appears on the ribbon.
    2. Click the Text Box tab, then click Text Fit.
    3. Choose one of these:
      • Best Fit makes the text bigger or smaller so it fills the box.
      • Shrink Text on Overflow makes the text smaller only when it doesn’t fit.
      • Grow Text Box to Fit keeps the text size and makes the box taller instead.
      • Do Not Autofit turns it off, so the text stays the size you set.

Character Spacing or Text Fit is grayed out

Section titled “Character Spacing or Text Fit is grayed out”

Both work on text you’re typing in. Click inside the text, not on the box’s border, and try again.

PubKeep already kerns text 14 pt and larger automatically. Changing that isn’t supported yet.

You can also link the box to another one so the text continues there. See Link text boxes so text flows between them.
