Working offline, and keeping your files safe

PubKeep runs on your own computer, and your files stay on your computer. You don’t need to be online to open, edit, save or print.

    1. Activate PubKeep once while you’re online. See Enter your license key.
    2. After that, a paid license keeps working offline, however long you’re away from the internet.
    3. During a free trial, PubKeep keeps working offline for up to 48 hours at a time, and never past the trial’s last day.

PubKeep checks your license and looks for updates when it can reach the internet. If it can’t, it keeps trying on its own.

It says “PubKeep couldn’t check your license”

Section titled “It says “PubKeep couldn’t check your license””

This can happen on a trial, or on a work network that blocks the check. Connect to the internet and click Try again. On a work network, ask whoever manages it to allow updates.pubkeep.com.

Your work doesn’t depend on us. Here’s why:

    1. Your original .pub files are never changed. PubKeep only reads them.
    2. A .pubk file is a standard ZIP file. When you save a .pubk from a .pub, it keeps a copy of your original .pub inside, named source.pub.
    3. You can export any publication to PDF at any time with File > Export > Export to PDF. A PDF opens on any computer, phone or tablet.

To keep an archive that will open anywhere, export your important publications to PDF and keep your original .pub files alongside your .pubk files.

How do I get the original .pub back out of a .pubk?

Section titled “How do I get the original .pub back out of a .pubk?”

Make a copy of the .pubk file and change the copy’s ending from .pubk to .zip. Open the .zip and copy out source.pub. Rename it to whatever you like, ending in .pub.
